Pale

Glyph of the word 'pale'.

pale

  • (n.) house
  • (v.) to live at, to reside

I pale i neale o kane…
“There’s a house at the end of the road…”

Notes: They have a model medieval Japanese house at the Japanese Garden at the Huntington. This is it from a distance:

A Japanese house.

They’ve removed a wall so you can see what it looks like on the inside (I forget if I have pictures of that). Very nicely set up, though.

The only problem (well, aesthetically, anyway) with a lot of these recreations of ancient architecture and other things is that modern safety concerns trump historical accuracy. So on the stairs you’ll see a metal handrail running down the middle. I believe you have to have one of those if you have stairs in a public place. Oh well…
